Tallinn Secondary School No. 2 in 1950s

In 1950s Tallinn Secondary School No. 2 had eleven grades and a growing number of students. At the beginning of the decade there were approximately 900 students while at the end of the decade it had already risen over 1000.  Because of the growing need for more space, in 1957 the old bandstand was torn down and replaced with a new house (‘The Small House’) which was opened in 1958.

Although the school was controlled by the strict political ideology of the Soviet Union, everyday life settled a little bit. That in turn meant that once again some teachers became legendary and some new traditions were established. The most famous teachers of that era were Chemistry and Science teacher Linda Visnapuu, Drawing teacher Voldemar Vahar and Music teacher Voldemar Tomingas.

In spring 1952 headmaster Emilie Pertels started the tradition of the final bell. Since 1956 alumni have gathered once every year.

Another important change in the school took place in 1954 when the boys’ school was reorganised as a co-educational school.
