Our region, Joniškis District

Joniškis district is in the Northern part of Lithuania. The territory of all Joniškis district is 1153 km².
A big part of territory takes plains. The landscape is not very varied, there dominates leafy forests and fertile soils. Joniškis region is an agricultural area. The fertile soils of this district allow the development of agriculture. Most of people cultivate grain cultures and a big part of these grains is exporting to the other countries.

Our town, Joniškis city
Joniškis  is a city in northern Lithuania with a population of about 11,150. It is located 40 kilometers north of Šiauliai and 14 kilometers south of the Lithuania–Latvia border. Joniškis is the municipal and administrative center of Joniškis district municipality. With the Church of the Accession of the Holy Virgin Mary (founded in 1901) and a complex of Jewish synagogues at its centre, the city has the status of an architectural heritage site. Joniškis has a Culture Centre, a local venue for music and theatre events. A railway line connecting Riga and Šiauliai runs along the western boundary of the city.

Our school, Joniškis “Aušros” gymnasium

Our school is located in a beautiful and quiet area, near the city park. It has five extensions, also the stadium and a huge garden. A few years ago, the gymnasium was renovated. Walls were newly painted; windows and floor were changed to new ones. All these repairs had modernized our school, but it still remains very cozy. Currently, school has 401 student and 37 teachers. Relationships between teachers and students are great, and everyone is friendly and helpful to others in our school.

Our natural site, Žagarė regional park

Žagarė regional park welcomes with a hilly landscape – Žagarė esker (8 km), Žvelgaitis, Raktuvė barrows, dolomite exposure, Švėtė springs.  Established: 1992. Area: 4,930 ha. Forest cover: 2,907 ha. Water cover: 89 ha. Swamps: 6,1 ha. In Žagarė you can visit Žagarė manor complex, the Old and the New St. Peter and Paul’s churches; one of those has a crypt for Barbora of Žagarė who is considered as saint. NATURA 2000: 4 protected areas in Joniškis district cover: 8.015 ha.
