Tallinn Secondary School No.2 in 1970s

In 1970 Oskar Radik became the new headmaster. In 1971, bas-relief of Georg Lurich was opened next to the school house. In 1975 the education system was changed to compulsory 11-grade secondary education system and the cabinet system of teaching began to take place. Under the leadership of Radik, special sport classes of the Tallinn II High School were also created. Those classes consisted of the most outstanding swimmers and athletes.

In 1976, representative physics teacher Hain Hiieaas became the headmaster. Under his guidance the teachers were saved from several strange commands from the Committee of the Communist Party. Since Hiieaasa’s years of being the headmaster, students began to be accepted on a competitive basis to the Tallinn Secondary School No.2.

The absolute highlights of the extracurricular activity were the hugely successful stagings of the musicals “My Fair Lady” and “Mary Poppins” in 1978 and 1979 which were led by an English teacher Vivika Miti.

Traditions were celebrated like today, however some changes have taken place. The last school bell ceremony was celebrated without national costumes. At that time graduation balls for seniors were district based but Tallinn Secondary School No.2 students decided to organise their own ball in the school. The tradition of receiving school badges has remained unchanged, but school badges have changed. There  is no longer sign, which shows the torch, but the shape of school badge has been maintained.

In the late 1970s Tallinn Secondary School of Science Alumni Association was founded. Alumni are role models for students, they are standing for the school honour and they appreciate symbols of Tallinn Secondary School of Science.
